How the Bank & Foundations Work Together

Foundations are charitable organizations with the principal purpose of making grants to unrelated organizations or institutions or to individuals for scientific, educational, cultural, religious, or other charitable purposes.

Foundations are critical as pioneers in supporting social change, engaging civil society, cutting-edge research, and in addressing issues of exclusion, the environment, post conflict resolution, education, and health.

In respect to World Bank activities, foundations help to inform development debates through their:

  • technical expertise
  • in-country knowledge
  • contacts with academia and the private sector
  • knowledge of civil society groups and local community based organizations and their capabilities.

Foundations also provide funds for such activities as:

  • co-financing of projects
  • helping to build consortia
  • research
  • conferences
  • start up funds for pilot projects
  • NGO participation in Bank consultations
  • monitoring and evaluating projects

For effective partnerships, foundations prefer to be involved  in the early stages of project preparation and conceptualization, and in many cases, to remain involved during the evolution of a project.
