One way or the other, there is now too much debt and too little equity in the advanced world, says renowned macroeconomist Willem Buiter. Why has debt risen across so many sectors of these economies in recent decades? What was the role of regulatory liberalization, financial innovation, politics and "loss of fiscal virtue"? And what are the politics and economics of possible scenarios looking forward? Will it be long and painful deleveraging and fiscal austerity? Can massively expansionary monetary policy save the day? Or is default and restructuring inevitable?
