Reducing Poverty

"We believe that combating poverty, giving opportunity to citizens, and providing effective development programs are the true keys to security and peace."

The development community's attack on poverty involves three broad sets of action:

Increasing opportunity: Expanding economic opportunities for poor people by building up their assets and stimulating economic growth.

Facilitating empowerment: Making institutions of the state more accountable to poor people and strengthening the participation of poor people in political processes and local decisionmaking.

Enhancing security: Reducing poor people's vulnerability to ill health, crop failures, natural disasters, economic shocks and violence.

Advances in the three areas are fundamentally complementary — each is important in its own right and each enhances the others.
