President Wolfowitz asked the students about their school and their favorite subjects. They answered: “mathematics” and “languages”. Education is one of the greatest challenges facing this new nation.

The Minister for Education and Culture, Mr Armindo Maia, accompanied the President on his visit to this newly constructed school. On the students” desks are copies of the very successful and highly popular magazine for children, Lafaek. Some 300,000 copies of this colorful learning tool, are sent to students across Timor-Leste every two months.

One student replied that he has been reading it avidly since he was in grade three - he”s now in grade six.
