Development and Poverty Reduction
Looking Back, Looking Ahead
This study, authored by President James Wolfensohn and Senior Vice President and Chief Economist François Bourguignon, was presented at the 2004 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, in Washington.
It outlines changes in development thinking and practice over recent years, and offers a "call to action" in areas such as trade, HIV/AIDS, governance, aid and progress toward the Millennium Development Goals. The authors note that, "we face a window of opportunity, one that may not stay open."
"The opportunity is to put into practice what we have learned about increasing opportunity and reducing poverty, at a time when demographics, economics, and even geopolitics should make that possible."
