Department of Institutional Integrity

The World Bank's Department of Institutional Integrity is mandated by the World Bank Group to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption in Bank Group operations as well as allegations of staff misconduct. The Integrity Department reports its findings to senior management, who in turn decide what measures should be taken. In addition, the Integrity Department assists in preventative efforts to protect Bank Group funds, and those funds entrusted to it, from misuse and to deter fraud and corruption in its operations. The work of an investigative unit aids the World Bank in ensuring that funds are used for their intended purposes, thereby contributing to the organization's core mission of promoting development and reducing poverty.

Fraud and Corruption in Photos

Children Still Taking Lessons in Overcrowded Thatched Hut

An Integrity Department investigator visited this school where children were still attending lessons in an overcrowded, thatched hut, while their new Bank-funded schoolhouse - just a few hundred meters away - was being used by a local official to store onions.

Note the debris embedded in this concrete support beam, photographed by an Integrity Department investigator during a site visit. Cutting building costs by using cheap fillers and other sub-standard materials in concrete increases profits at the expense of structural integrity.

30% narrower than contract specifications

This rural road was 30% narrower than the contract specifications, and was also missing a gravel surface that would have extended its useful lifespan.  An Integrity Department investigator's tape measure shows the gap after full payment had been made on the contract.
