Please find here the link to the central multilingual terminology database, or Termbase, compiled and maintained by the World Bank translation unit's Terminology Team. The database contains validated terminology material in Arabic, English, French and Spanish. Chinese, Russian and Portuguese terminology will be entered into the database in FY05/06. How to browse this terminology is explained in the How to Browse the Multilingual Terminology guide, which you can download here (PDF). This central terminology database will facilitate a central terminology validation and vetting support system for local offices and other Bank-wide language resources. It will enable the sharing of all available terminological knowledge among all stakeholders involved, thus preventing terminology for linguistic context or terms from being inconsistent, from failing to take into account local terminology or not being made available to everyone. Last but not least, the centralization of terminology data in the realm of efficient resource management would provide timely and fast access to those validated resources when needed. All this should help enhance and expand Bank-wide translation quality output, while ensuring cost-effectiveness. Please find here a data flow chart that outlines the envisioned terminology validation (PDF) and record-creation process and serves as a fundamental quality-assurance step.  If you have any comments or suggestions, please send an email to translation@worldbank.org.
