Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the Extractive Industries

A Workshop for Legislators

On February 28-29, 2008, in Arusha, Tanzania, the World Bank together with the PNoWB partnered with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in organizing a Seminar which gathered  parliamentarians from major EITI countries in Africa to discuss matters pertaining to extractive industries in the East African Community (EAC).

Arusha 1The seminar was held in collaboration with the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the Revenue Watch Institute (RWI). It included the participation of EALA members and elected legislators from each member country (about  50 parliamentarians from the Region attended the workshop).

From 2005-2006, the National Democratic Institute (NDI) conducted research in nine African countries – Angola, Botswana, Chad, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and South Africa – to assess the ability of the legislative branch of government to promote transparency and accountability in this key sector. The results of the study were compiled in a report, “Transparency and Accountability in Africa’s Extractive Industries: The Role of the Legislature”, which was shared during the workshop.
