Research Bank on the World Bank

News! 3rd PhD Seminar on the World Bank, May 16, 2007, Bled, Slovenia
Some 20 doctoral students conducting research on the World Bank Group presented their papers and discussed with World Bank staff at the "3rd PhD Seminar on the World Bank".

The workshop was scheduled to coincide with the Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE), which took place in Bled, Slovenia, on May 17-18, 2007, under the theme of “Private Sector and Development”. See the agenda and view workshop papers.

Rationale

Academics all over the world study and produce research work related to the World Bank’s policies and operations. However, the findings of their work often do not receive due recognition. Similarly, the World Bank does not profit from the conclusions reached by external researchers. In order to close this gap, the “Research Bank on the World Bank” project was initiated.

Research Bank on the World Bank, Budapest Workshop

Under this theme, the Central European University in Budapest hosted a workshop for doctoral students to present their work on their main subject of study: the World Bank. The two-day workshop in April 2005 provided a unique opportunity to discuss and reflect on World Bank policies and programs together with World Bank staff and provided a platform for exchanging experiences and best practice.
Papers and presentations addressed issues such as:
• The World Bank as a Broker of Knowledge
• PRSPs in the Legacy of Structural Adjustment
• Environmental Issues and the WB: The Case of the Equator Principles
• The Comprehensive Development Framework
• Case studies on World Bank reform agendas
• The role and function of research within the World Bank

Outcomes of the Budapest Workshop

•  Routledge-published volume of papers presented in Budapest, with a preface by Ian Goldin, former Vice President for External Affairs, Communications and United Nations Affairs;
•  a group of 3 young researchers from the Budapest Workshop received a grant to attend the Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) held in Tokyo in May 2006, as well as the Annual Meeting of the Researchers Alliance for Development (RAD);
• e-mail distribution list initiated in order to continue the discussions on World Bank related themes.
• follow-up meeting, Budapest+1, planned at the occasion of the World Bank – IMF Annual Meetings in Singapore.

Budapest + 1, Singapore Workshop

The follow-up workshop in Singapore is supported with a grant from the Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom. The workshop is organized by the Centre for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization at the University of Warwick in conjunction with the Researchers Alliance for Development, the Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy and the External Affairs Vice Presidency of the World Bank (Paris Office).

Papers and presentations will address various aspects of activity of the World Bank Group:
• World Bank-IMF relations
• The Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers
• Academic/civil society outreach of the Bank
• The Comprehensive Development Framework
• Governance and World Bank organisational restructuring
• Country studies of World Bank policies and projects

17 doctoral-level researchers representing developed and developing countries alike were awarded a travel grant to participate in the workshop.
The workshop featured presentations of papers in 5 sessions, chaired by prominent academics and with World Bank staff in the role of discussants. In addition, a group of academic and civil society representative attending the Annual Meetings was invited to the workshop as observers.
The workshop was also an occasion to officially launch the Budapest volume of papers.
