Introduction and Objective
Almost a third of the world's citizen's lack access to clean water and sanitation systems and every day, over 840 million people go hungry. What are the global dimensions of poverty, climate change or conflict? And what does a term like 'global governance' mean in practice?
Building on the recognition that most issues have a global dimension, the World Bank is offering a Global Issues Seminar Series starting October 2005 to promote better understanding of the nature and significance of global issues, and to generate discussion on the actions that are already under way.  Students will engage in a discussion with development practitioners and students in other regions who may be affecrted differently by the issues addressed in this seminar.
Format
This seminar series is open to senior undergraduate and graduate students of the social sciences, international development, public policy and business.
16 key global issues, grouped into four themes (see chart below) will be discussed. The seminars will draw on the research by the World Bank as well as by others. The series follows a pilot series that was conducted jointly by the World Bank and Kobe and Hiroshima Universities in Japan in Spring 2005.
Themes
- Global Economy
- Human Development
- Saving the Planet
