The World Bank believes that ensuring adequate levels of basic health and nutrition lies at the heart of poverty reduction and economic development. The Bank’s overall mission on health is to assist developing countries to improve health, nutrition, and population outcomes of the poor and protect people from the impoverishing effects of illness, malnutrition, and high fertility.

The World Bank Brussels Office participated along with WB offices in France, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethopia, Nepal, Guatemala in a video conference consultation with civil society, government officials and other stakeholders on the Bank's new Reproductive Health Plan.
Reproductive Health is one of the priority areas identified in the World Bank's 10 year strategy for health, nutrition and population, produced in 2007. The Bank is now preparing a Reproductive Health Action Plan to lay out the key issues, challanges, and opportunities as we seek to mobilize greater attention and support and deepen our work with partner agencies for reproductive health programs. This is a central part of the Bank's focus on strengthening country health systems and efforts to accelerte progress toward MDG's4 and 5. The action Plan will be discussed with the Bank's Board of Directors in early 2010.
October 2009 - Global Health Responsibilities Conference
World Bank Director for Health Nutrition and Pupulation Julian Schweitzer participated in a Conference on Global Health Responsibilities for Global Health Rights organized by the Helene De Beir Foundation in Brussels. The purpose of the conference was to examine how concepts like the right to health, global social health protection, or human/health security could be realized, and what the comparative advantages of different funding channels are in order to improve complementarity. October 2009 - Global Health Challenges Conference
Julian Schweitzer the World Bank's Director for health Nutrition and Population was the lead speaker at a conference organized by the Global Fund in collaboration with UNAIDS, GAVI Alliance, and Stop Aids Alliance during the European Development Days in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference aimed to provide a forum for debate on what the current economic crisis entails for global public health and how best to meet the challenges and take advantage of opportunities.
