7 June 2006 World Bank Brussels presentation of World Bank/IMF 2006 Global Monitoring Report

Amongst the key findings of the World Bank/IMF's latest report on progress made in achieving the MDGs outlined in the Brussels presentation of the report are that:

· Recent progress in human development outcomes points to the need for more flexible aid, better coordination, and improved governance.

· Governance should be regularly monitored to help track progress, generate greater accountability, and build demand for further progress.

Commenting on the report, EC Director for Development Policy, Bernard Petit expressed support for its approach to governance but cautioned that governance cannot be imposed on developing countries from outside. Fellow commentator on the report, Alex Wilks, Eurodad Coordinator, expressed concern that global initiatives on governance may trample on local efforts on the issue. A point agreed on by almost all speakers at the meeting was that a harmonized approach to fostering good governance amongst donors and recipient countries is essential if the MDGs are to be advanced.
