The World Bank's 16th Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) took place in April 2004, in Washington, D.C. The conference theme was "Lessons of Experience." The conference was inaugurated by World Bank President, James D. Wolfensohn, and featured keynote addresses by the Bank's Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, François Bourguignon, and Nobel laureate Vernon Smith, as well as papers by Richard Cooper of Harvard University, Gustav Ranis of Yale University, Sendhil Mullainathan of MIT, Remy Prud'homme of the University of Paris, and Riccardo Faini of University of Rome.
