THE ABCDE SUPPORT GRANT (ASG)
Funded by the Government of The Netherlands and The World Bank
As in the previous years, the organizers offered a limited number of support grants for participants of the ABCDE 2005 based in developing countries. The grant aims to ensure that the conference is accessible to academics, researchers, and young leaders from countries all over the globe. Ultimately, the purpose of the Program is to establish contacts between grantees and involve them in The World Bank academic network.
In 2005, 34 participants from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe attended ABCDE as part of the ABCDE Support Grant.
History
The ABCDE Support Grant was established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway and the World Bank at the occasion of the 2002 edition of the ABCDE held in Oslo, Norway. The purpose of the grant was to support participants from developing and transition countries who would be otherwise unable to attend the conference.
Selection Criteria and Eligibility
Successful applicants receive a lump sum payment to cover their transport and accommodation during the conference. Recipients of the ASG will be asked to contribute to the conference by writing a two-page summary and analysis of 1-2 plenary or workshop sessions which will be posted on the ABCDE website.
Applicants must be nationals of and reside in a developing or transition country. Decisions are made based on the applicants' qualifications and their abilities to transfer experience and knowledge gained at the conference to their professional communities upon return home. The decisions made by the selection committee are made with a view to ensure a fair gender balance and regional representation.Â
Representatives of non-governmental organizations, journalists and students are also encouraged to apply.
