The dataset used in PovcalNet is based on the income/expenditure distribution and the PPP figures.
The income/expenditure distribution are provided by the country teams in the World Bank. These distribution are grouped into deciles, ventiles or percentile (odd number of groups such as 19 or 24 may also be used in order to best approximate the distribution from the survey). Extensive testing has been conducted to compare the grouped dataset and unit record dataset; the difference is ignorable. However, user may still see some minor discrepancies between on-line replications and the Bank's estimates, such as in the WDI.
The 2005 PPP data is constructed by the World Bank's Development Data Group from the 2005 price surveys done by the International Comparison Program released earlier this year. For a complete distribution please refer to ICP home page. Users can also download the complete table of 2005 PPP (in PDF format) from ICP site.
A brief 2005 PPP table used in PovcalNet can be download here. This Excel file corresponds to column "Individual consumption expenditure by households" of "2005 ICP Global Results: Detailed Tables" (page 9 in the PDF file or page 29 in the printed report "Global Purchasing Power Parities and Real Expenditures -- 2005 International Comparison Program" ).
For the countries not participating in the ICP projects, the PPP data is based on the regression estimation. World Bank's Development Data Group has provided a detailed explanation.
