ROBERT F. TOWNSEND is a Senior Economist in the South Asia Sustainable Development Department. He has experience in both research and Bank operations in agriculture and rural development. His research work has focused primarily on agricultural incentives and productivity, while his operations work has included both design and implementation of agricultural programs. He has held positions in the Africa, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia Rural Development Departments of the Bank, with most of his past work focusing on Africa. He received his PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Pretoria.
