Water is the most precious natural resource in the region, yet it is becoming increasingly scarce.  METAP’s work on water revolves around improving water quality, and better managing coastal zones.

METAP has developed Regional Water Quality Strategy based on a series of country reports. The strategy promotes policy coordination, monitoring and information dissemination, through data collection, the preparation of regional guidelines, and regional and national training workshops.

Water quality management is defined as the planning, organization, execution, and monitoring of all activities that have an effect on the quality (chemical, biological, visual, etc.) of water resources.

METAP has also produced a series of management plans for coastal zones, which are home to many citizens and wildlife, a major source of food and raw materials, a vital link for transport and trade, yet face problems of habitat destruction, water contamination, erosion and resource depletion.  METAP has contributed to legislation, public awareness, economic studies, training, and institutional capacity building related to these important areas.
