World Bank Depository Library in Balti
Â
November 7, 2008.Balti is the second largest city in Moldova, and it is home to a multi-ethnic community and the largest university in the northern part of the country. Here, on November 7, the World Bank opened its second regional depository library.
At the opening ceremony, Melanie Marlett, the Moldova Country Manager noticed: "We hope the library will be a useful and informative resource for students, civil society and the general public in Balti and surrounding areas. The World Bank is a solid development partner for the Moldovan Government and the Moldovan people and we believe the more Moldovans are informed about what we do in the country and around the world, the greater role they can play in supporting our ongoing efforts to reform and modernize Moldova."
The event was a good opportunity to consult with local academics on the new Country Partnership Strategy and get a better understanding of socio–economic issues facing the community and the educational system in general.
A magnificently hospitable reception and a tour of the Library revealed the many opportunities the institution offers for joint work. With an impressive history and a reputation for excellence in education, Balti State University was the alma mater for generations of economists, physicists, mathematicians, lawyers and linguists.
The World Bank publications and reports will complement the 1.5 million books stored on the shelves of the University Library and pave the way for future activities with the scientific and academic circles in northern Moldova.
