June 22, 2009, Tokyo - A workshop on the Global City Indicators Program and the development of a greenhouse gas index for cities was held on June 22, 2009 at The World Bank Tokyo Office.
In response to the urgent and compelling need for a single, master system of global city indicators that measure and monitor city performance and quality of life, the Government of Japan funded the development of the Global City Indicators Program initiated by the World Bank and other partners. The Global City Indicators Facility (GCIF) enables cities to measure, report, and improve their performance in city services and quality of life. The Program provides an established set of city indicators with a globally standardized methodology that allows for global comparability of city performance and knowledge sharing. To date, the program includes 21 cities in Columbia, Brazil, the United States, Canada, Iran, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Italy, South Africa, Nigeria, and India.
The workshop aimed to inform Asian cities on the GCIF, and to extend the network with increased knowledge-sharing within the program with Asian cities experience. The workshop was sponsored by the World Bank through the Government of Japan Consultant Trust Fund in collaboration with the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center, Japan (OECC).
