In November 2005, 48 countries committed to crack down on illegal logging by improving forest law enforcement and governance. They signed the "St Petersburg Declaration."

 Black Sea & Danube Basin Initiative
The Black Sea/Danube Basin has become polluted over the past four decades causing significant losses through reduced revenues from tourism and fisheries, loss of biodiversity, and increased water-borne diseases. This initiative aims to promote investments and capacity building to return the environment to its 1960s condition.

This intitiative aims to foster trade in the sub-region. It promotes more efficient and less costly trade flows across the countries of Southeast Europe and provides customs standards compatible with the European Union.

 Southeast Europe - Social Development Initiative
This regional initiative aims to provide the Governments of South East Europe, the donor community involved in the region, and in particular the World Bank with the capacity to carry out social analyses, promote institution building, and launch pilot projects to address inter-ethnic tensions and social cohesion issues in South East Europe.
