Launch of the 1818 Economists' Chapter

1818 Economists' Chapter was launched under the aegis of the 1818 Society.

The Chapter's goal is to foster a conversation among  Chapter members on topical economic issues through seminars and circulation of information about other ongoing events in the Washington DC area that may be of interest to Chapter Members.

The Chapter's first chair is Vikram Nehru, who is freshly retired from his World Bank position as Chief Economist and PREM Director for East Asia and the Pacific.

The first event that launched the creation of the Chapter was a presentation by Uri Dadush and William Shaw on their recently published book "Juggernaut".

The key messages of the presentation were that the rise of developing countries -- in particular the BRICs -- will irreversibly change the global economic landscape and trigger a  seismic shift in global patterns of trade, finance, migration, and management of the global commons. At the same time, Uri and William highlighted a number of risks -- friction between the rising and the established powers, the threat of protectionism, further financial crises given inadequate and incomplete international financial reforms, and the implications of crisis change.  The presentation was followed by a lively question and answer session during which 1818 Society members -- many of them eminent economists -- engaged with the authors on a number of interesting issues.  We would like to thank Uri and William for an excellent start to the Chapter's proceedings.

Future Chapter events are likely to include a session on China (in July), and subsequent ones possibly on Africa, food security, and Afghanistan.  If readers have suggestions on possible presenters and topics, please contact the Chapter's Chair, Vikram Nehru (tel: 202-473-2429;  email: vnehru2@gmail.com).
