2012 Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transition to Medco

Following are frequently asked questions and answers related to the transition from Catalyst Rx to Medco on January 1, 2012.

Selection of Medco to Replace Catalyst Rx

  1. Why is Medco replacing Catalyst Rx?

In the pharmacy benefit management industry, vendor pricing and services change often.  The World Bank Group conducted a competitive bidding process for pharmacy benefit management services in order to obtain the best possible pricing and services for its Washington-based staff and retirees enrolled in the Medical Insurance Plan (MIP).

  2. How was Medco selected?

Medco was selected through a competitive bidding process this fall. Representatives of both the Staff Association and the 1818 Society were involved in the selection process.

Transition Questions

ID Cards

  1. Will I receive my new Medco pharmacy card before January 1?

Staff members/retirees and their family members who were enrolled in the MIP as of November 1, 2011 should receive their new pharmacy cards from Medco around December 15 at their home addresses.

  2. I just enrolled myself and/or eligible family members during the open enrollment period in November.  When will I receive my pharmacy cards?

For staff and family members who were newly enrolled in the MIP during the November open enrollment period, pharmacy cards will be delivered later in December.  Unless the member’s address is not current in the Bank’s records, all cards should be received by January 1, 2012.

  3. What do I do if the information on my pharmacy card is incorrect?

The information on your pharmacy card is based on World Bank Group records.  Therefore, if there is a mis-spelling of a name, this will need to be corrected by contacting the HR Service Center at hrservicecenter@worldbank.org or by calling 202-473-2222. The HR Service Center will then send the corrected information to Medco so that Medco can issue a new pharmacy card.

Other Communications

  1. Will I receive any other information from Medco?

Yes.  Along with the pharmacy card, the Medco welcome kit will include information on Medco’s retail pharmacy network, preferred drug list, mail order service, specialty medications and other Medco services.

  2. How soon can I contact Medco?

Medco’s customer service unit will be available to take calls from staff, retirees and enrolled family members starting December 15.  To reach Medco customer service on or after December 15, you will call 1-877-567-5572.  Medco’s customer service will be able to answer questions on eligibility, Medco’s retail pharmacy network, Medco’s mail order services and transfer of refills from Catalyst to Medco. If you call this number before December 15, you will get a recorded message stating that the line is not yet available.

  3. Does Medco have a website that I can access?
Yes, Medco’s website is www.medco.com, however, you will not be able to register as a member on the website until January 1.  For questions before January 1, you can contact Medco customer service by phone on or after December 15.

Transfer of Prescriptions from Catalyst

  1. Will I need to get a new prescription from my doctor or will my current prescriptions be transferred from Catalyst to Medco?

Most members will have their mail order prescriptions with open refills transferred automatically from Catalyst to Medco.  The following prescriptions will not be transferred and members will need to get a new prescription from their doctor:
    • Compound prescriptions
    • Controlled substances (narcotics, some sleep medications)
    • Prescriptions with no remaining refills

  2. Will my payment information for mail order transfer from Catalyst to Medco?

Mail order payment information (credit cards, for example) will not be transferred from Catalyst to Medco.  The Medco welcome kit will include information on how to provide your payment information to Medco.

  3. My medication will run out around the end of December. What should I do to make sure I have a supply of medication?

If you have a medication with open refills, you should request a refill from Catalyst or the pharmacy before January 1.  If you are due to run out of medication in early January, you should either request a refill at the end of the December or get a new prescription from your doctor to be filled using your Medco pharmacy card as of January 1.

Medco Preferred Drug List

  1. Medco has a different preferred drug list from Catalyst.  How will I know if I am affected by this change?

The new preferred drug list will be included in the welcome kit you receive from Medco.  If you are affected by this change, Medco will send you an additional communication with more information shortly after you receive the welcome kit.

  1. How will I know if my pharmacy is included in the Medco retail pharmacy network?

If you use an independent pharmacy, you can call Medco starting on December 15 at 1-877-567-5572 to see if they are in the network.  All of the major retail chain pharmacies (CVS, Rite-Aid, Giant, Safeway, Target, etc.) and Foer’s are included in the Medco network.

Specialty Medications

  1. I currently receive specialty medications from Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy.  Will I continue to receive my medications from Walgreens?

No, as of January 1, 2012, Medco’s specialty pharmacy, Accredo, will provide your specialty medications. More information about Accredo will be included in the welcome kit.

Diabetic Supplies

  1. I participated in the Diabetic Sense program with Catalyst. Can I continue with this program with Medco?

Since Diabetic Sense is a Catalyst program, this will no longer be available as of January 1, 2012. However, you will still be able to receive generic and preferred brand diabetic supplies through mail order with $0 copay from Medco. You do not need to enroll in any program to receive these services.
