A Bank staff member recommended that we review MEYHANE which is run by owners Dogan Turker and Pauline Tiffen who offer Mediterranean cuisine with a distinctive Turkish imprint. The Palate team was augmented by two young ladies, daughters of team members, one who is studying in South Africa, the other in Monaco. Meyhane is a non-pretentious restaurant with simple décor. Our server, Candice, was a friend of the owners and, like Ms. Tiffen, had worked at the World Bank. On her recommendation we ordered two of the Mezze Platters – the Black Sea and Mediterranean - which were a good fit with our eight- member Palate team. Highlights of the Black Sea platter included the Shepherd’s Salad which was light and accompanied by a good dressing; Pastirma Borek filled with mozzarella cheese was crisp and tasty; the grilled lamb kofte was beautifully seasoned and scrumptious and a unanimous favorite. The Sujuk, a thinly sliced lamb sausage was excellent and the Meyhane Chicken, a delicately flavored house special that has grilled chicken pieces dipped in mashed potatoes and rolled in roasted red peppers was a delight. The Mediterranean Platter offered Baked Shrimp – whole shrimp with tomatoes, green peppers, onions, mushrooms all topped with mozzarella cheese. The combination of flavors was excellent. The Octopus Meze, although tender, was not popular with the Team as it was considered bland. Hunkar Begendi, a dish made for the sultans of Turkey, consisted of grilled eggplant pureed as a base with tender slow-cooked lamb with a delightful sauce. The platter came with the Meyhane Salad.
An a la carte menu is available and any of the dishes from the platters can be ordered as a main course. Prices range from $7.95 to 10.95.
Candice strongly recommended the Baklava made by Dogan Turkur’s mother and we ordered it. It was moist and filled to the top with pistachios and not overly sweet. The Chef prepared us a warm chocolate soufflé, a house specialty. It was light airy and flavorful. We finished the meal with a Turkish coffee.
The team was very pleased with the friendly exceptional service. The cost of our lunch including tax and tip was $20 per person. Parking was available on the street and the Eastern Market Metro stop is one block from Meyhane. We gave the restaurant a very high rating and know that we will be returning with families and friends.
We will return. |
