The MMMF is exploring ways of extending its educational grants program to include students from developing countries who are studying in their home countries or regions. The University of Pretoria (SA) has been selected for this MMMF pilot project. Learn more... |
Grant Purpose: To support the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in a developing country.
 Previous grant recipients studied agriculture, architecture and urban planning, civil engineering, education, forestry, journalism, law, nursing, nutrition, pediatrics, public administration, public health, social sciences and social work. |
For students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada, the MMMF awards annually about ten grants of approximately $11,000 each; grants are not renewable. Please follow the application procedure below.

| Eligibility Criteria for the US and Canada |
| A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria: |
| 1. | She must have a record of service to women and/or children in her country. |
| 2. | She must reside in the U.S. or Canada at the time she submits the application. |
| 3. | She must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. or Canadian educational institution for the academic year 2007-06 and remain enrolled during the entire year of the grant. |
| 4. | She must use the grant to continue to study for her degree. |
| 5. | She must be a citizen of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank and cannot be a U.S. Green Card holder or Canadian landed immigrant (Click here to view Country Eligibility List) |
| 6. | She must plan to return to a developing country in about two years after receiving the grant. |
| 7. | She must demonstrate financial need. |
| 8. | She must be at least 25 years old by December 31, 2007. |
| 9. | She must not be related to any World Bank Group staff member or his or her spouse. |
| The governing body of the MMMF has established the criteria and regrets that it can make no exception. |

| Grant Contract for the US and Canada |
Grant recipients are required to sign a contract agreeing to the following:

| | If an MMMF grant recipient receives a grant from the World Bank Graduate Scholarship program in the same calendar year in which she receives an MMMF grant, her MMMF grant shall be rescinded. |
| | The MMMF expects grant recipients to return to their home countries or another developing country within approximately 30 months after receiving their grants and then to perform at least two years of service in her country or another developing country. |
| As a condition of the grant, the recipient will agree to make a contribution to the MMMF of the full amount of her grant if: |
| a. | the recipient does not return to her country or another developing country within 30 months of receiving the MMMF grant, or after completing her studies in the US/Canada, or |
| b. | the recipient does not complete the two years of service within 54 months of receiving the MMMF grant or after completing her studies in the US/Canada. |

| A. | Registration |
| | All applicants are required to REGISTER ONLINE PRIOR to accessing the online Application. Remember to record your username (the first and last name you use to register) and the password you create. You will need these in order to access your online Application in the future. Allow up to 30 minutes after registration before starting the application process. In some cases it can take up to an hour. Click here to Register. | 2) | Set of documents: In addition to submitting your Application Form online, the following documents are required and must be mailed together to the MMMF, postmarked no later than February 29, 2008: |
 | Your most recent transcript (available from your college or university Registrar's Office) |
 | A copy of your Fall 2007 Registration |
 | Two (2) letters of recommendation: The two completed recommendation forms must be returned to you in sealed envelopes. One must be by a professor from your present institution. The other may be by a former professor/supervisor and may be from your country. One of the individuals must have known you for at least two semesters. Please use the MMMF Recommendation Form. |
 | Official estimate of expenses for foreign students as published by your institution. (available from the Foreign Student Advisor or Financial Aid office of your college or university) |
 | One (1) passport-size photograph |
 | Copy of your US/Canadian Visa |
 | Copy of I-20 / DC-2019 (formally IAP-66) (applicable for applicants of US universities) |
 | Copy of Study Permit (applicable for applicants of Canadian universities) |
| DEADLINES: The completed online Application Form must be submitted no later than midnight, February 29, 2008. Incomplete forms will be rejected. The additional set of documents listed above must be mailed to the MMMF stating your Application ID, postmarked no later than February 29, 2008. |
| RESULTS: Only successful recipients will be notified around May 1, 2008. |

| Grant Payments for the US and Canada |
 | Grant payments will be made directly to recipients' institutions around June 1, 2008. |
 | Grants may not be used to repay debts or loans. |
 | Grants that are used for expenses that are not required for enrollment (e.g., room, board, travel research, child care, etc.) are generally subject to US/Canada tax and income tax withholding, even for non-US/Canada nationals. Only tuition and related expenses (e.g., tuition, required fees, books, supplies, etc.) are exempt from US/Canada tax and withholding. The tax treatment of grant funds may be affected by the terms of a tax treaty between the recipient's home country and the United States/Canada. For your specific tax responsibility, contact your advisor or your institution's financial office. |
