The World Bank and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) will co-chair a meeting on East Timor's reconstruction and development, hosted by the Government of Portugal in Lisbon, June 21-23.  Representatives from East Timor, multilateral institutions, donors and NGOs are convening to discuss resource mobilization for East Timor's civil service and for UNTAET and to review the plans set forward at the Tokyo meeting of donors in December 1999, the first such meeting for East Timor.

The meeting will be preceded by the Donors Council of the World Bank-administered Trust Fund for East Timor (TFET) on June 21, which seeks to confirm a work program for East Timor's reconstruction and development from July to December 2000.  The first six months of TFET activities will be reviewed.

"The Lisbon meetings present an opportunity for the international community to identify strengths and weaknesses early in the process and move forward together in support of the Timorese people." said Sarah Cliffe, Resident Representative of the World Bank in East Timor.
