Policy Choices and Practical Problems in Health Economics: Cases
from Latin America and the Caribbean--Between 1988 and 1991, the
World Bank's Economic Development Institute (EDI) and the Pan
American Health Organization sponsored a series of seminars on
health economics and financing in Latin America. The collection
of case studies presented in this book were assembled as a teaching
tool for the seminars. Country case studies look at an antimalaria
program in Brazil, primary health care in Honduras, the pharmaceutical
supply in Jamaica, health from a macroeconomic point of view in
Mexico, and financing the health sector in St. Lucia. A brief
summary of several basic concepts used in economic and financial
analyses serves as an orientation for applying these concepts
to the cases. $14.95. Stock no. 13012 (ISBN 0-8213-3012-8).
Taking Action to Reduce Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa--Based on
a report by a World Bank task force, this book provides a candid
assessment of the Bank's operations in Sub-Saharan Africa. It
examines how the Bank can strengthen its operational response
to poverty and improve food security, recommends improvements
and innovative approaches to poverty reduction, and discusses
ways of strengthening and making further use of regional initiatives.
Although the report identifies improvements in the work on poverty
reduction that have taken place since 1995, it finds that much
remains to be done. $20.00. Stock no. 13698 (ISBN 0-8213-3698-3).
