Alan Gelb is a key Bank spokesperson on African economic issues. He provides strategic policy advice on African development issues and directs the Bank's economic research, analysis and advice to African countries. Before assuming his current position, he was staff director of the World Development Report 1996: From Plan to Market, and was chief of the transition division in the Bank's policy research department. He has also served respectively as chief of transition and macroeconomic adjustment for financial systems and macroeconomics. Mr. Gelb is a specialist on commodity prices, cooperatives, financial systems policy, and systemic reform. He has published several books and scholarly articles on these and related subjects, and recently co-authored Can Africa Claim the 21st Century, one of the most authoritative studies on African development.
