In a tragic paradox, rivers in West Africa bring to villagers not only water but the debilitating disease known as "Riverblindness". The film depicts the economic and social upheaval that occurs when the disease strikes. In one village, 75% of the residents are infected; in others, adult members are so incapacitated that they can no longer work, and young boys must shoulder their responsibilities.
