February 19, 2002 — A doubling in official development assistance and an increase in private sector investment are needed to finance infrastructure to ensure that the world’s poor gain greater access to transport, electricity, water and telecommunications. Providing these basic infrastructure services will help cut extreme poverty in half by 2015 by bolstering the number of children in primary schools, reducing child mortality, improving the living conditions of slum dwellers, and enabling local businesses opportunities.
