Iran: Environmental Management Support Project

Date: April 9, 2003
WASHINGTON, April 9, 2003—The following project was approved yesterday by the World Bank’s Board:

LOAN AMOUNT:  IBRD—US$20 million
TERMS:  Grace period = 5 years; Maturity = 17 years

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The proposed project would be a first phase of a long-term effort by the Government of Iran (GOI) to improve environment management in the country.  Its main objective would be to enhance the capacity of the Department of Environment (DOE) and other related agencies to plan, monitor and enforce environment regulations and action plans.  This would be realized through pilot targeted interventions which could be scaled up through a programmatic approach based on lessons learnt.  Targeting would be geographical (focusing on the three provinces of Tehran, Isfahan and Khorasan) and sectoral (focusing on water and air quality management in these provinces).  For more information, please call Sereen Juma at 202.473.7199, or e-mail sjuma@worldbank.org
