CREDIT AMOUNT:  IDA —US$20 million
TERMS

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
:  This project will provide financing for the first phase of an ambitious plan to bring electricity and communications capabilities to rural communities, where 40 percent of the population live.  New or improved technologies, including solar energy and cellular telephony, will conquer geographical obstacles that have limited past infrastructure expansion projects in the countryside.  Initial goals include installation of 15,000 household solar power systems, 25,000 new cellular phone users in 100 communities, and a fully operational Internet portal that is part of the “Country Gateway” web network of development-oriented information systems.  For more information, please call Christopher Neal at(202)-473-7229, fax at 522.3698, or e-mail Cneal1@worldbank.org
