Deepak Bhattasali has recently returned to Washington DC from the World Bank's office in Beijing, where he was the Chief of the Economics Unit and Lead Economist for five years. He is recognized as an expert on China's economy and on Asian regional issues. His recent publications include books on China's WTO accession and on intergovernmental fiscal relationships within China. Prior to moving to China, he was the Economic Advisor to the two Vice Presidents for Sub-Saharan Africa in the World Bank, and  has nine years of experience on African economic issues, especially Eastern African countries. He has served in various capacities in Asia--including nearly four years in the World Bank's office in Indonesia--and has worked with IFC. Before joining the Bank, he worked for a Japanese Government aid agency in Tokyo, taught in the economics faculty at Boston University, and was an economist for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. He was educated in New Delhi, Tokyo and Boston.
