The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are an international set of targets to be reached by 2015.
November 11, 2004—Two of the goals are intended to place girls in the driver’s seat of their own destinies.
The first is to get them into the classroom; the second is to secure access to higher education, followed by entry into and promotion within the labor market.
As the world approaches the halfway mark for achieving the goals, originally set forth in the early 90's, the international community is taking stock, assessing where we are, and looking at what needs to be done to reach the development objectives embodied in the goals.
This is the first in a series that will look at girls, education and empowerment.
