India: Assam Agricultural Competitiveness Project

WASHINGTON - The following project was approved today by the World Bank’s Board:

CREDIT AMOUNT: US$154 million

TERMS: Grace period = 10 years; Maturity = 35 years

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The main objective of this project is to improve the productivity of the agricultural sector in Assam, located in the northeast part of India. The credit intends to stimulate the growth of Assam’s agricultural economy, through predominantly pro-poor activities, directed primarily at small and marginal landholders, poor fishing communities, and the landless. Rural communities in all districts of the state will be impacted directly by various aspects of this project.
