Generating Income for Local Communities in the Amazon

Available in: Français, Español, العربية

Pilot Program Basket Weaving sub-project

The Basket Weaving project is an initiative of the NGO Saúde e Alegria (Health and Happiness), a local partner of the World Bank Rain Forest Unit and the Pilot Program.

The aim of the project is to promote sustainable development in the National Forest of Tapajós and generate income for local communities. Members of a local women’s association make the basketry artwork and sell it to nearby tourism centers and Sao Paulo mega-stores, and export it to arts-and-crafts shops in New York. These craftswomen allocate 10 percent of their profits to a community fund to support reproductive health.
