Pilot Program to Conserve the Brazilian Rain Forest (PPG7)

Available in: العربية, Français, Español

The PPG7 is a multilateral initiative of the Brazilian government, civil society and the international community aimed at developing innovative tools and methodologies for conserving Brazil’s rain forests.

Program objective: to maximize the environmental benefits of rain forests through the implementation of pioneering projects that contribute to the ongoing reduction of the deforestation rate in Brazil.

The Program was launched in 1992 with financial support from the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, and from the European Commission and the Brazilian Government.

To facilitate program execution and financial management of funds, donors designated the World Bank as trustee of the Rain Forest Trust Fund (RFT). Since the beginning, $428 million has been made available by donors to the Pilot Program, either through bilateral cooperation or the RFT, which has received a cash inflow of over $73 million.

The Program’s main lines of action focus on:

  • Experimenting with and demonstrating ways of protecting Brazil’s rain forests and using them in a sustainable fashion

  • Protecting and conserving rain forest natural resources

  • Strengthening civil society and public institutions involved in environmental protection of Brazil’s rain forests

  • Supporting scientific research and disseminating findings to conserve Brazil’s rain forests

Results so far:

  • Demarcation of 45.4 million hectares of indigenous lands, establishment of 2.1 million hectares of community-managed extractive reserves, and significantly increased adoption of certified forest management across the legal Amazon.

  • Implementation of a participatory approach to biodiversity conservation at the local level and funding of over 200 community projects that experiment with new models of rain forest conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.

  • Stronger public institutions with enhanced capacity for environmental management in the Amazon. Modernization of key research centers in the region.

  • Participation of civil society in policy dialogue. New political constituencies and stronger civil society networks linking more than 700 NGOs.  Thousands of community leaders trained in fire prevention and control.
