Comments of Paul Wolfowitz to Reporters After Meeting with President Oscar Berger

Available in: Español

Jocotenango, Guatemala, April 28, 2006

Reporter: What are your impressions after a day of being in Guatemala?

Paul Wolfowitz: After a day here, I can’t be an expert, but my impression is that this country has had a very painful history and the last ten years have been a wonderful first step on recovery from a difficult past.

There’s great richness in this country. There’s richness in diversity of cultures, sophistication and depth of the cultures here. And this country, I believe, will become a real paradise for tourists. But the greatest richness of this country is its people, and I believe, as President Berger, that with the right policies Guatemala can begin to employ its people in Guatemala instead of exporting them for the benefit of other countries. We at the World Bank would like to do everything we can to assist, but I think that the most important thing is for Guatemalans to work together as Guatemalans in spite of the differences and in spite of the past. That’s the spirit of you and your colleagues and I admire that. And Mr. President, judging from this crowd, you have a free press, which is a good sign.

Muchas gracias.
