Voodoo places of worship double as HIV/AIDS prevention centers in Benin. The innovative approach is funded through the Multi-country HIV/AIDS Program (MAP). Under that program, voodoo leaders undergo training. Previously, priests and priestesses were enforcing high-risk HIV/AIDS behavior, including rituals that use one blade for scarification on people, as well as sexual ceremonies involving groups. It is the kind of program that is key to keeping prevalence rates low in traditional communities.
