World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz joined with Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in calling for the international community to reach agreement on clearing Liberia’s debt.

Opening the Liberia Partners Forum 2007 at the Bank’s headquarters in Washington DC, Wolfowitz said the US$3.7 billion debt accumulated during the years of armed conflict in Liberia was “an unacceptable burden for a country of only three million.”

The Bank President warned that if Liberians failed to see further improvements in their lives in the short term “the forces of violence could engulf their country once again.

“Liberia could slide back into chaos that threatens not only its own people, but also its neighbors,” Wolfowitz said.

For her part, Johnson-Sirleaf said Liberia was “not out of the woods yet” adding that it was crucial Liberians see steady tangible results in the year ahead.

She said debt relief was urgently needed to free up new resources for the country, so it could move “from aid to trade.”

At the forum, US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice announced the US plans to cancel Liberia's $391 million debt to the US and would work with other donors to "resolve the multilateral debt."
