Jakarta, 22 March, 2007: On March 20, 2007, the Board of Directors unanimously endorsed the proposal for "Strengthening World Bank Group Engagement on Governance and Anticorruption." This paper articulates the World Bank Group's strategy for heightening its focus on governance and anticorruption as an integral part of its work to reduce poverty and promote growth
This revised and improved strategy is the result of intense work by many staff across the institution, feedback and suggestions from many shareholders, and wide-ranging consultations in 47 countries with over 3,200 people including representatives of governments, civil society, parliamentarians, the private sector, donor agencies, and media representatives.
The goal of the consultations was to ensure that the global governance strategy benefits from the experience of the wider development community and is also grounded in country realities. Board members expressed their appreciation for this consultative process. All of the consultation reports are posted on the Bank’s website at www.worldbank.org/governancefeedback.
The strategy paper was greatly enriched by this dialogue and will be publicly disclosed shortly. The executive summary will be submitted as a background document to the Development Committee, which had requested a report for their next meeting in Washington D.C. on April 15.
In a message to staff, Mr Wolfowitz said the new strategy would provide a framework to deepen the approach to development and to help poor people improve their lives. The plan would address the need to remain sensitive and flexible with regard to country circumstances and needs while strengthening the Bank's important governance and anticorruption work in support of its core mission of assisting the world's poor to escape poverty.
