June 28, 2007 - 'I have learned today with great regret the resignation of Rodrigo de Rato as the Managing Director of the IMF after the annual meetings.
Throughout his tenure at the Fund, Rodrigo has provided key intellectual leadership in shaping up a medium term strategy for the Fund to adapt to the new challenges of globalization. He has also played a lead role in the ongoing discussions on how to better reflect the weight of all of its members in the global economy and how to enhance the voice of low income countries in the Fund.
I would like to thank Rodrigo for the work we embarked on to implement together the historic multilateral debt relief initiative agreed upon by our shareholders in 2005. I am also grateful for our partnership in fighting global poverty and his support to close Bank-Fund collaboration, especially in Africa.
I am also thankful for his invaluable friendship and advice. We have had a true culture of collaboration between us which I believe has benefitted both of our institutions. I am pleased that Bob Zoellick will be able to benefit from Rodrigo's wisdom and generosity of spirit during his first months as President of the World Bank and wish Rodrigo continued success and happiness.
