GEF Trust Fund Grant to the International Center for Tropical Agriculture for Latin America: Multi-Country Capacity-Building for Compliance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

WASHINGTON, March 25, 2008 - The following projects was approved today by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors:

 

Global Environment Facility (GEF) Grant: USD$4million

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Global Environmental Objective (GEO) of the project is to strengthen the capacity in the four participating countries, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru to implement the Cartagena Protocol (CP) on biosafety. Specifically it aims to strengthen the technical capacity in knowledge generation for biosafety risk assessment and management; and strengthen the biosafety decision-making capacity. The proposed project is one of two projects (the second project being a GEF medium sized  Regional Capacity-Building for Compliance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety project) which are being developed to address the biosafety knowledge and capacity gap.
