WASHINGTON, DC [HIGH-RES]
April 12, 2008 "The first political essential is that we seek real leadership by the developed countries, and that leadership needs to be demonstrated through these nations taking on ambitious emission reduction targets. It is also essential that the major developing countries engage further in the fight against climate change. It is politically not acceptable to move forward in a process where major developing countries do not engage."-- Yvo de Boer, UNFCCC Executive Secretary

WASHINGTON, DC [HIGH-RES]
April 12, 2008 "Unless developing countries can see a solution which helps them to continue to grow to meet the poverty alleviation of their people, we won’t be able to find a global deal...We [the World Bank] will be the ‘blue collar workers,’ as [Bank President] Mr. Zoellick said, helping negotiators visualize what really could happen on the ground through our products and programs, and testing out new ideas, and using the financial strength and capabilities of our organization…We want to utilize the strength of our partnerships with our clients, always remembering this has to be client-driven and with a poverty focus.
