Jamaica: Social Protection Project

WASHINGTON, May 13, 2008- The following project was approved today by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors:

 

IBRD Loan: US$ 40 million

TERMS: Maturity = 30 years; Grace = 5 years

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  This project aims to strengthen the country’s social insurance and social assistance system by supporting the following activities:

Improve the effectiveness of the Program of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH) to foster investment by poor families in education and health.

Build capacity to implement the “Steps-to-Work” program, a new initiative targeting working age members of PATH eligible households for referral to the relevant support services to enable them to seek and retain employment

Enable the formulation of a reform program for the public sector pension schemes

Develop a holistic social protection strategy
