WASHINGTON, July 18, 2008 – The following is a statement by World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick on the proposal announced today by the European Commission to establish a 1 billion euro rapid response facility for the poor in developing countries:

“Millions of people are at risk because of the food and fuel crisis and so I welcome the proposal of the European Commission to establish a rapid response facility worth 1 billion euro to help the poor in developing countries. As I said to the G8 leaders in Japan after President Barroso and I discussed the proposal, it is a valuable, timely, and most significant contribution. I urge the European Council and European Parliament to support this proposal as soon as possible in order to provide relief to those most at risk from hunger and malnutrition.”
