ISTANBUL, TURKEY, OCTOBER 5, 2009 --Meeting with the World Bank’s key policy making body, in Istanbul, Turkey, Bank president Robert Zoellick says his institution is flexible enough to meet changing global demands.
He stressed that the World Bank’s core mission of helping the poorest must remain unchanged….and to do that, the World Bank needs to have adequate resources at its disposal.
Zoellick says the meeting gave the go ahead to look into his plan to set up a new system to give grants and loans quickly to world’s poorest 79 countries in future crises..and backed the setting up of a new trust fund in the wake of international pledges for a $20 billion US dollar food and agriculture initiative.
He underscored the fact that though the global financial crisis may be easing, developing countries are still hit hard.
