Developing Insurance in the Face of New Challenges:
Capturing Solvency II and Market Inputs to Expand
the Reach of Insurance

The World Bank and IFC jointly organized the inaugural Global Insurance Conference on June 1-2, 2011 in Washington, D.C. The event was attended by 170 participants, including World Bank Group staff. Participants represented 30 countries, including: Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Montenegro, Slovenia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Haiti, Panama, Peru, Israel, Jordan, Saudi , UAE, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

The objective of the conference was to establish a platform for World Bank Group staff, clients, and leading players in the (re)insurance field to discuss and debate new developments, exchange best practice, formulate initiatives and create momentum in select areas. These included:

  • Solvency II (from the Regulators' and Industry's Perspective)
  • Bancassurance
  • Trends and Innovations in Insurance Products (Agricultural, Catastrophe, Health, Islamic Insurance/Takaful, and Motor-Third Party Liability)
  • Policyholder Protection Measures
