Summary of Finalists- Global DM2006

The 2006 Global Development Marketplace Competition received 2,525 proposals from 154 different countries. After three rounds of assessment, 118 finalists have been selected, representing 55 countries. A summary of finalist proposals by region of implementation, notable countries, organization type, and primary sector can be seen below.

There is a great deal of geographical diversity among applicants representing 55 countries. India has come in strong with the highest number of finalists (18), followed by Kenya (7), and Nepal (6).

Six countries---Bhutan, D. Rep. of Congo, The Gambia, Lesotho, Turkmenistan, and Vanuatu---are first time finalists to the Global DM.


As seen in past DM competitions, the vast majority of primary applicants are NGOs (53%) but surprisingly the second largest group this time around is the Private Sector (21%) which in turn partnered with NGOs 47 percent of the time.

As can be seen below, 43 percent of proposals fall under Water Supply, with 33 percent categorised as Energy projects, and 24 percent fall under Sanitation. There are 44 proposals focusing on Service Delivery and 30 categorised as 'Environment' subtheme, with the rest divided equally across Health and Natural Resources.
