Magic Bus: Mentoring At -risk Children

 Project Description

dot.gif Objective:To impart critical life skills to at-risk youth in Mumbai, helping them reintegrate into mainstream society.

dot.gif Rationale:Many Indian NGOs help ensure that at-risk children receive food, shelter, clothing and education. But few fill the role of teaching survival skills to children so that they can make sound choices and overcome the hurdles they face to reintegrate into mainstream society. The slums and streets of Mumbai are crowded with children for whom childhood is a luxury they cannot afford. These children typically acquire destructive habits, are prone to criminal behavior, remain illiterate (and often unemployed), and make unsafe choices that include joining gangs or abusing drugs and alcohol.

dot.gif Innovation / Expected Results:Magic Bus is a mentorship program that uses non-classroom activities and experiential learning to help at-risk children in India. Mentors teach protective life skills that develop a young person's emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being. The Magic Bus works exclusively with children and youth with destructive habits such as smoking, alcohol and drugs, and behavioral problems such as habitual anger, violent mood swings and conduct disorders. The project expects to benefit 400 children initially in Mumbai and, if successful, will be extended to other cities across India.
