SELECTION/ASSESSMENT PROCESS

1) How were finalists selected? Can you explain the assessment process? Who evaluated and made a decision on my proposal? Which criteria were applied to choose finalists?
The guiding principles of the Development Marketplace(DM) assessment process are fairness, diversity of views, consensus and transparency. To this end, the DM team assembled over 200 development experts from the World Bank Group and a range of other organizations to serve as assessors in the selection process and review the eligible proposals. The 100 finalist proposals were selected from over 1,700 applications through a rigorous process. This involved two rounds of individual reviews by teams of 3-4 assessors with relevant sector experience and diverse regional and organization expertise. Each team met to deliberate and collectively select which proposals to advance to the next round of review. The criteria of innovation, growth potential, results, realism/organizational capacity, and sustainability were used to select the finalists. Please click here to find a more detailed description of the assessment criteria.

2) I think my proposal should have made it to finalist stage. Can I provide you with further information or contact assessors to clarify and make a case for my proposal?

No. In the interest of fairness and transparency, it is not possible to contest the decision on finalist proposals. All applicants had access to the same information and competition guidelines and faced the same constraints in expressing and presenting their idea (e.g., word limits, proposal template, and timeframe). Additionally, all proposals were subjected to the same assessment process.

3) Can I see the score/ranking of my proposal in the process? How close did I come to being a finalist?
DM cannot provide non-finalists with scores or rankings. The two rounds of group deliberation meetings requires only that the group reach consensus on which proposals to pass forward into the next round.

OTHER FUNDING SOURCES

4) Can I use the same project idea to apply for a Country/Regional Development Marketplace (CDM) competition or another DM Global Competition? Does DM have other funds/grants programs?
Yes. Non-winning proposals submitted to the DM2008 Global Competition can be used for applying to a Country/Regional Development Marketplace (CDM) competition or a subsequent global competition as long as they fit the respective theme and eligibility criteria of that competition. Please check our website ( www.developmentmarketplace.org) for further information on the timing of these competitions.

Apart from these competitions, the DM does not have any other funds/grant programs.

5) Are there other funding sources that I could approach with my proposal?
Many of the proposals that we received have the potential to find alternative funding elsewhere, and we encourage you to continue seeking support from other sources. Please click here to view additional funding sources that may help you explore alternative possibilities. Finally, please check the DM website periodically – we sponsor several country and regional competitions each year in addition to the global competitions that take place every 12-18 months. Please see question four for more information.
